Sarawan
Half-Thai by birth and all American by upbringing, Sarawan came to Bangkok in 2001 after brief stints living in Budapest and Milan. Her attempts to learn Thai and dig deeper into Thai culture have been, um, less than successful, but always met with humor and encouragement by the Thais around her.

Every time I step into a taxi with my toddler, I’m wracked with indecision – is it safer to place her in the seat next to me, or strapped into the baby sling? As she gets bigger, would it be safer to buckle her in the front seat, or keep her in the back?

If you ask the farangs you know who speak good Thai, many will tell you the same thing – learn to read. After years of dragging my feet on this one, I’ve finally taken their advice and learned the alphabet and it really is a whole new world.

Right. I’m finally learning Thai.
This refrain has punctuated my 8 years here – I repeat it with the best of intentions every couple of years or so – without much forward progress. But when I discovered I was pregnant, I knew my time was running out.
