Things to do with a newborn

Newborns have some pretty basic demands from life: feed, sleep, feed, cry, feed, sleep, feed some more. It’s amazing to think that it takes up all of our time and attention to just provide those basic needs; but in those first few days or weeks, that’s may be about all you’re capable of.

At some point, though, you may find yourself wondering what else there is to do with your adorable, but not necessarily interactive, newborn. Here are some ideas to help you enjoy and interact with your baby while regaining your own mobility and independence.

  • Babywearing. Put your baby in a sling as you go out for a walk, do your shopping, or even as you do chores about the house. This is a great way to bond with your baby while regaining that unimaginable luxury – use of both your hands at the same time. This is especially useful if you have a fussy baby, or one that requires constant holding, but is enjoyable for most babies and parents.
  • Infant massage. Infant massage is an enjoyable way to promote parent-baby bonding in those early days. Studies also suggest that it can lead to reduced crying, better sleep and lower stress levels.
  • Join mothers’ groups. A mothers’ group is a great first excursion with a young baby. You can connect with other mothers who understand exactly what you’re going through. You get out of the house, but are still in a very safe and nurturing environment where you can nurse as openly as you please and no one will mind if the baby starts crying at the top of his or her lungs.

Cultural differences also apply – Thai families traditionally keep a newborn baby at home for at least a month after birth. Westerners are much more likely to cart their newborn out and about to restaurants or errands (particularly if it’s a second or third child and there’s a busy family schedule to manage).
