If you are ready to actively prepare yourself for pregnancy and birth, there are a few things that you may want to consider doing:
Join a childbirth class or birth discussion group
Most hospitals offer childbirth classes, often for free, though these can focus as much on hospital procedures as the birth process. If you are keen to learn more in-depth about different birth strategies, you can also look at the possibility of independent childbirth classes through our directory.
Prepare a birth plan
Preparing a birth plan can help you and your partner think through possibilities that may occur during childbirth and decide beforehand how you would prefer to approach each situation. A Guide to Having Your Baby in Bangkok has a helpful section on birth plans. Working with a doula through this process is another way to help ensure that your birth plan is suited for the context in Thailand and to the specific hospital where you will be birthing.
Make sure you and your doctor understand each other
Be sure to discuss your birth plan with your doctor, so that they are aware of your preferences. If, in more extreme cases, you no longer feel comfortable with your doctor’s approach, don’t be shy or embarrassed to change your doctor even if it is towards the end of your pregnancy – you will not be the first or the last to do this.
Secure the support of a doula
Several studies indicate that having a doula present helps women have shorter labors with fewer complications, higher chances of having a drug-free birth, lower chances of giving birth by caesarean, higher chances of a woman being satisfied with her birth experience, greater feelings of confidence by women’s partners, and more successful breastfeeding. Different doulas may have different training, strengths and philosophies, so if you are interested in working with one, take your time to choose a doula whose personality and approach fits with yours.
Take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally
This is one of the most important things to do, and one of the easiest to overlook, particularly if you continue to work late into your pregnancy and/or you have other children.
Connect with other expecting parents
Being able to share your questions and ideas (and complaints) with other expecting friends is a godsend. But meeting other expecting parents in this crazy city can sometimes be hard, especially if you’re working. Click here for some suggestions.
i would prefer delivering a baby in thailand because of the systematic approach involved here i’m a mothe r of four kids and expecting my fifth child in september i hate c-sections and would prefer for avbac
HELP ME OUT!
Saima, VBACs are possible here, but you really have to select your doctor carefully and be informed about what you want and discuss with your doctor in detail. It will also depend on how many c-sections you have had in the past. If you are in Bangkok, I would suggest that you attend a “Choices in Childbirth” meeting – I think the next one is on August 25. You can check with Doulas of Bangkok via their Facebook page about the exact time and date.
